Sustainable Capacity-Building for Countering Violent Extremism

Sustainable Capacity-Building for Countering Violent Extremism: Documenting and Promoting Local Narratives of Tolerance and Inclusion in Central and South Punjab funded by US Embassy (2021-2023)

This project, funded by the U.S. Embassy, was implemented in collaboration with Company E and the Smithsonian Institution. The project aimed to foster cross-cultural dialogue and creative expression by bringing together diverse Pakistani communities through the medium of cultural storytelling and performing arts.

At its core, the project introduces innovative methods of dance, theatre, and visual storytelling as tools for dialogue, drawing on the rich expertise of Company E and the Smithsonian in intercultural programming. Activities included interactive workshops, performances, and community engagement sessions that allowed participants from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds to explore themes of identity, shared heritage, and peaceful coexistence.

The program was designed not only as a cultural exchange but also as a capacity-building initiative. It equipped young participants, community leaders, and emerging artists with creative skills to use storytelling as a means of addressing stereotypes, countering divisive narratives, and strengthening community resilience.

By engaging participants from across Pakistan, the project amplified pluralism and mutual respect, while creating opportunities for sustainable networks between U.S. cultural institutions and Pakistani civil society. The stories and performances generated during the program are being disseminated through digital and community platforms to ensure wider reach and long-term impact.
